Wrinkles form when the skin’s supporting mesh, made up of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, breaks down. This loss of volume causes the skin to sink inward slightly and form either depressions or folds. Dermal fillers counteract this sinking effect by reintroducing volume to the depressed area.
Belotero® is composed of one of the skin’s supporting substances, hyaluronic acid (HA). When injected into a wrinkle or fold, the gel-like material fills in the wrinkle by expanding like a sponge. This added volume pushes the sunken area back up until the fold fades. Because it is based off of a naturally occurring biomaterial, Belotero’s® results do not interfere with normal movement and facial expressions and feel extraordinarily natural to the touch. Often referred to as the “starter filler,” it is potentially ideal for minor touch-ups to very fine folds on the face.

Belotero® injections are administered during a very simple procedure that typically lasts between 10 and 30 minutes. The process is quick and causes only minor, if any, discomfort. To ensure that any pain is minimal, a topical anesthetic is applied to the injection site prior to administration.
The effects of Belotero® treatment usually last between four and six months, requiring renewal only once or twice a year. Over time, patients may require fewer injections with less filler.
After their procedure, patients should monitor the injection sites for signs of:
- Hard or tough skin
- Some pain
- Bumps around injection site
These side effects typically clear up within a week of receiving the injection. Most are easily concealed with makeup until they subside. If any of these visible side effects are still present a week afterward, you should contact Dr. Freund’s office immediately.
Belotero® offers patients many potential advantages. As one of the lightest and thinnest dermal fillers available, it greatly reduces the possibility of developing small lumps or the bluish tinge referred to as the Tyndall Effect. Furthermore, because it integrates with the skin’s natural tissues, Belotero® preserves your normal facial movement while producing smooth and full results.
As an added bonus, HA naturally stimulates the production of other supporting structures such as collagen. Consequently, each Belotero® injection induces your body to produce enough biomaterial over time to rebuild structure on its own.
The ideal candidate for Belotero® injections is looking to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth and plump up areas with minor skin depression and fat loss. Patients looking to fill more deeply set lines may better benefit from alternative options. However, treatment results are evident on all skin colors and types.
There are some limitations to the treatment. Belotero® should not be used by patients who have a history of multiple or severe allergies. Any skin inflammations or infections such as cold sores or rashes must be completely healed prior to administration. Patients taking medicines that affect blood clot formation or the immune system may need to look into alternatives, as well.
